So you want to know more about child custody. In Florida, the primary goal of Florida legislature is to ensure that both parents have contact with their child, and that this is done in a manner that protects the child and is in the child’s best interest. While a lot of times it’s good for both parents to be in the children’s lives, it’s not always the case, unfortunately.
So there are different types of parenting. Basically, there’s four kinds of parenting that can happen in Florida. The first is shared responsibility, shared parental responsibility, and that’s what’s commonly known as “joint,” where you both make decisions. Then you have shared parental responsibility with ultimate decision making, and this is where one parent, after discussing it with the other parent, gets to make the ultimate decision. This might be about a medical issue or education. Then you have what’s called sole parental rights. This is a case where really one parent’s not participating. And the parent who’s given the sole parental rights is allowed to make all decisions, even without discussing it with the other parent. The final way is termination of parental rights, and of course that terminates the other parent’s rights.
So while everyone is concerned about money and we’re concerned about finances, of course, during a disillusion, one of the highest priorities will center around a child’s best interest.
