Let's talk about a unique cycling adventure and the allure of Mont Ventoux, a mountain with a rich history in the world of cycling. I'm here to share my experience of tackling a lesser-known gravel climb and how it transformed my perception of this iconic peak.
The Challenge of Mont Ventoux
Mont Ventoux, a mountain with a reputation among cyclists, has inspired many to take on its challenging ascents. I, too, was drawn to its allure and became a proud member of the Club des Cinglés du Mont Ventoux after completing all three road routes in a single day. But I craved a new challenge, something that would push me further.
Discovering the Route Forestiere
Enter the Route Forestiere, an unmade road, also known as the Route des Cèdres, which winds its way through the forest. This fourth route to the top of Ventoux was added to the Cinglès challenge, creating the Galérien challenge - a true test of endurance and skill.
The biggest concern for me was the practicality of attempting an 'off-road' ascent with a road bike. It seemed like a daunting task, but I was determined to give it a go.
My Journey to the Fourth Way
I set off at dawn, armed with warnings about the difficulty and the importance of timing. The ride to Bédoin and the initial ascent gave me a false sense of ease, but soon I turned off onto the gravel road, drawing curious glances from fellow cyclists.
The Route des Cedres offered a unique experience. I felt a sense of accomplishment, knowing I was tackling something new and unfamiliar. The climb was tough, with gradients reaching 10%, and the surface was rough, testing both my healing collarbone and the handling of the bike.
A Remote and Peaceful Experience
As I climbed, I felt a sense of solitude. The Route Forestiere was a world away from the bustling Tour de France route. I could glimpse the summit, but fellow 'road' users were nowhere to be seen. It was a peaceful and remote experience, almost like discovering a hidden gem.
The middle section was the toughest, with an increasingly rough track and challenging inclines. But sticking to the main route paid off, and I was rewarded with an improved surface and a false flat, offering a moment of respite.
Reaching the Summit
Reaching the summit of Mont Ventoux via the Route Forestiere was a special moment. Bathed in the early morning sun, with clear views across to the Alps, it was a beautiful and quiet achievement. I felt a sense of respect and admiration for this mountain and its ability to challenge and inspire.
A Tribute to Tom Simpson
I couldn't resist paying my respects to Tom Simpson, a British cycling legend who lost his life on these slopes. I visited his memorial, a powerful reminder of the mountain's potential dangers. Simpson's death serves as a stark warning, emphasizing the importance of approaching any ascent of Mont Ventoux with humility and preparation.
Final Thoughts
Tackling the Route Forestiere was an incredible experience, and I highly recommend it to any adventurous cyclist. It adds a unique dimension to the already legendary Mont Ventoux. Remember, when taking on this challenge, respect the mountain, prepare adequately, and revel in the wilderness and your accomplishment. It's an experience that will stay with you long after you've descended.
